Mary Justis somewhere in Texas, 1938

"There are untimely errors people face in understanding the degree of risk they are about to take in the world. They simply embrace a great mindful awkwardness, where blunders made in the course of chasing bliss could mean the end of happiness, with the start of suffering beyond anything they previously imagined. The edge becomes the word. It is the thing that drives a restless spirit in the pursuit of thrills and fleeting joy. In her youth, my mom slipped into the frightening, but sometimes satisfying dominion of risk. She was wooed by, and eventually married a tall, handsome man who raced motorcycles. As a couple, in following their dizzying excitement, they never made those mortal errors of judgment."
