I generally wear a backpack when I'm riding to work, mostly for my wet weather gear, but also has replacement clutch cable, and a few useful odds and ends in. I have always felt I was better off with it on, everything feels tighter for some reason, maybe this is why, there's a lot of fully developed turbulent flow on that rider's back. I don't know if the backpack gives me better aerodynamic properties, or just means I can't feel the drag directly, but then I've not looked at fluid flow in such a long time.
